Cowroast to Leighton Buzzard

Kidlington to Leighton Buzzard

A late start after my bank holiday weekend boozing.

Managed to get going for around 11am.

Tring, which is the pound up, is the summit pound for the Grand Union south. On the Oxford Canal, the summit pound is Napton. It’s been closed south from Napton for the last 2 months.

There was plenty of water in Tring.

Day of locks

No let up with the locks, probably about 12-15 individual locks for a 6 hour day.

The countryside is less urban. More rural. There’s livestock or arable farmland in the fields. Not sounds of traffic or airplanes, or motorways. It’s all quite and serene.

Mooring at Leighton Buzzard

I reach Leighton Buzzard at around 7.40pm. Just starting to get dark.

There’s a lot of boats moored up here, which worries me a little on the way in. I don’t really want to be turning around and coming back in the dark.

Fortunately, as we get further in, the boats thin out a bit. I manage to moor up next to a park I’d scoped out on Googlemaps. It’s on the other side. The trees don’t offer so much shade and it’s South facing. Good for getting my cooking done in the evening as that sun will be providing all the energy to do it!

After the first day, the batteries had managed to get up to 99%. And that was with rain! Very good.

Mobile signal is pretty good.

Walk to town is maybe 6 minutes. Waterpoint and CRT facilities 5 minutes, so pretty ideally situated.

Managed to park my car in a carpark with CCTV. That’s going to be sitting there for a while, so that’s a lucky find.

Yesterday, I cycled back to Kidlington to pick my car up and it was only 36 miles.

The Thames, Oxford and Grand Union canal trip from Kidlington to Leighton Buzzard

The journey took me from Saturday the 17th August until Tuesday 25th August. I had one day off, in Walton. The other days I was sailing.

That makes 9 days sailing.

What a whopping effort for a net gain of 36 miles.

Bonnie rest period

Bonnie’s going to stay in this vicinity until I sort some more employment out.

Pub – The Ship Inn

Won’t be doing these again. It was only for my journey where I was curious what the places were like as I travelled around.

Last night’s pub was conveniently named ‘The Ship’. There were a grand total of 3 patrons on the premises when I visited which was around 9pm.

I had a Grolsch, which for £4.80 was nice.

Looked like it was more of a food pub, as I’m sure most pubs are nowadays. You simply can’t make any money from 3 people a night turning up.

Until next time.

  1. Countryside looks pretty. Those double locks must have been hard work. Nice to get away from the urban to the country. Leighton Buzzard sounds quite nice.
