Basically a full day of locks.
Bank holiday Monday. The sun was out, birds singing. After catching my fish, I managed to get an early start at around 8am. When I finished the day, maybe it was 7.30pm. Stopped for about 20 mins for lunch. So almost 11 hours sailing to the day.
Had a few drinks on the way. Dropped in at Aldi.
Angry shouty boaters
Was shouted at by another boater for speeding. Was the guy I was moored next to for 2020 COVID lockdown. Came to the window and started swearing at me. The truth is, there’s always going to be agro types.
4 people came to the window, about to shout ‘slow down’ in Hemel/Apsley.
Must be ‘slow-down’ shouter country.
Of the 4 that dashed to the window to shout, only one actually did it, and it was this guy. For anyone that knows anything about boats, I was passing at the same speed as the picture above.
Apsley/Hemel
Nice on a boat. Probably the wrong impression, but it seems like a great place from the waters edge.
Birkhamstead
Had a real good vibe to it. Lot’s of people out in the pubs, cafes that backed onto the canal which there were 3 that I counted. All of them different types of punters enjoying their bank holiday Monday.
Lots people stopped to talk.
Lots of fishermen.
Lots of walkers people on the towpath. Some even helped me with the locks. Sold my fishing maggots to 2 youths who were out fishing on the lock landing. They weren’t catching much. I gave them to them for £2. Glad to get rid of them. One of them caught a fish straight away, so he was fairly happy about that.
After Birkhamstead, it was just open country, with locks….
Made it to Cowroast about 7.30.
Artisan pub – Cowroast
Went in to this one on someones suggestion. It’s the only pub in Cowroast, so a fair suggestion!
It was ok, in that there were people sitting around having food or drinks. A pint and a packet of crisps was £8.70 which I though was over the odds. Expensive even.
I sat at my bourgeois table and took a couple of picks.
It seems a very expensive get up for a very small village.
Had my pint and got off home.
Tomorrow, I should make it to Leighton Buzzard, my final destination.
