World Press Freedom Index

May 3rd marks the global survey on press freedom, something that I picked up on a couple of years ago.

They’ve produced this rather nice map.

Press Freedom Map
Press Freedom Map – 2016

Here’s the map as it stands last year.

You can read more about press freedom on their website.

[su_pullquote align=”right”]Global press freedom declined to its lowest point in 13 years in 2016 amid unprecedented threats to journalists and media outlets in major democracies and new moves by authoritarian states to control the media, including beyond their borders.[/su_pullquote]

Censorship is another indicator of declining press freedom, and governments and other actors are finding new ways to promote repression, many of which compromise the necessity of an open internet. The CPJ analyzes countries to determine their status using a series of benchmarks, including:

  • the absence of privately owned or independent media,
  • blocking of websites,
  • restrictions on electronic recording and dissemination,
  • license requirements to conduct journalism,
  • restrictions on journalists’ movements,
  • monitoring of journalists by authorities,
  • jamming of foreign broadcasts, and
  • blocking of foreign correspondents.

The resulting list of the 10 Most Censored Countries includes Eritrea, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Iran, China, Myanmar, and Cuba.

Oak Hill – Dun Aqueduct

Just at the other side of the canal, the River Dun winds it’s way through the valley, separating the canal from the railway.

I dropped some fish in there the other day.

It’s a chalk/gravel stream with a small indigenous population of brown trout.

River Dun

You can see, it’s quite deep and it’s registered as one of the UK’s gravel streams of which there are 210 chalk world, and 160 of those are in England. Continue reading “Oak Hill – Dun Aqueduct”

Oak Hill

A couple of pictures from ‘oak hill’.

It’s got a much nicer vibe than Little Bedwyn.

The pound hasn’t emptied out. There seems to be a lagoon outside my window and a view down to the River Dunn, which I went down to today.

I’m going to take some pictures next time I venture down there, it seems rather pretty.

Like John Everett’s Ophelia.

I’ll take some pictures next time I’m down there.

BBC fake weather reports

I know.

It’s not a new thing.

Am confined to my quarters today.

The forecast is bad, but the weather has only shown spots of rain.

I took the pictures between the downpours.

Little Bedwyn -> Oak Hill

So after the dramas of the day, I’ve moved on, from Little Bedwyn to Oak Hill.

In case you didn’t read the previous post, which contained some incorrect information, I’ll explain a little about what happened.

1) My car had no Tax and I had no log book

They no longer provide physical tax disks, and you have no idea when they’re going out of date without consulting the documentation. I’m not sure where this is, it may be in Lt Haywood.

I don’t know.

When I was in Newbury picking my bike up I was approached by a guy in the car park.

[su_quote]”Is this your car” – “er, yah” “Are you aware that you’re driving without vehicle tax?” – “er, no” “According to our records, this vehicle is not taxed and you can’t drive it on the road”[/su_quote] After some searching for documents. [su_quote]”Been off-roading?” – “I live on a boat, have to go down little lanes sometimes”[/su_quote]

This may have swung things in my favour.

Eventually he drove off… He gave me an hour to get home and get my documents, which I did not have.

I’ve no idea where they are.

Had to apply for some more £25.

Also had to pay for some tax £88.

2) My bike went missing

First it was there, then it was gone.

I only went up the canal to turn the boat around. Continue reading “Little Bedwyn -> Oak Hill”

Chased by sheep – Little Bedwyn

Usually it’s the other way round.

These sheep started mobbing me as soon as I went into the field. Fairly soon, there was a whole herd of them following me!

Sheep

Maybe the farmer gets them to be friendly so he doesn’t have to chase them round when he wants to catch them!

I’ve never seen them get this close before.

You could touch their heads, although they didn’t like that much.

After a while, they realised I didn’t have any food and stopped following me…

Life on the canal

I have some new solar panels, which is nice. Just as the sun has gone in.

Even so, they are passing a little on to the battery even if it’s not that sunny.

1-2 amps.

Enough to charge a phone up.

Apart from that, life continues….
