Day 32 – Kidsgrove to Stone

Day 32 – Kidsgrove to Stone

A full day. In every respect.

Camera gave up, and refused to record any timelapse through the Harecastle.

Harecastle Tunnel
Harecastle Tunnel

Turns out the SD card was full. It ran the battery down anyhow.

Waterexplorer tells me it’s 17 locks and 16.16 miles total for the day.

Harecastle tunnel

Had to wait about 30 minutes to go in.

The CRT attendant was friendly and professional. Talked me through all aspect. Couldn’t ask for a lot more.

Day 31 – Wheelock to Kidsgrove

Day 31 – Wheelock to Kidsgrove

Wakey wakey, a day of locks ahead.

And what fun it turned out to be….

Not as punishing as Wigan and the Rufford branch in many ways. But when I stopped for lunch, I felt tired out.

Even considered a nap.

Never happened.

Moored up, had lunch and carried on through the locks.

Heatbreak hill

For those who would like a more adventurous break, a trip up “Heartbreak Hill” or the Cheshire locks as the old boatmen called them is worth considering.

This route takes you from the Cheshire plain up to near Stoke on Trent a climb of nearly 300 feet in about 30 miles. As you climb the hills, the panoramic views get better and better.

Day 30 – Marston to Wheelock

Day 30 – Marston to Wheelock

Encountered my first problem today.

Knocked chimney off on a bridge 😮

The mitigating circumstances were the fisherman 2 metres before the bridge with 2 lines in the water, that I tried to avoid..

I won’t be doing that again. Lesson learned.

Broken flange

The chimney itself is fine. It’s the aluminium flange that took the damage.

It ripped off.

I stopped after the bridge and had a quick look. Took the chimney off and put it on the stern then carried on to Wheelock.

Day 29 – Dunham Massey to Marston

Day 29 – Dunham Massey to Marston

I’ve just been assaulted by a guy driving a bright pink sports car.

He appeared feeding the ducks. As I passed, he shouted “hey dickhead”, I of course ignored him.

Then he started shouting it more, so I turned around, to see this guy in a woolly jumper and duck food in his hand making kind of squatting motion with his legs, like a football hooligan and shouting obscenities…

I flicked him the finger and drove on.

Next thing you know, he’s pulled up at the next bridge in this bright pink Ferrari or kit car it looked like.

He was walking down and it started again.

I thought he was going to drop something off the bridge on me…. some Unilever dust fell off his shoulder, or there was something on there making him a bit batty.

Anyway, he was saying “stop”, let’s sort this out jump off, “let’s go”.

I said “no”, and told him he was overweight and something else.

Anyways, as I disappeared down the canal, he jumped in his sports vehicle. Revved it up and left.

Viewranger mapping app

Viewranger mapping app

Today, I’m going to be using Viewranger route tracking app for Android.

Due to the limitations of Googlemaps, I’m going to find something which will store and record the routes that I’ve taken, does the maths, and plot the graph for me.

Maps has a limit for the online version. I can only add a certain amount of content before it tells me I’ve exceeded the given number of separate additions to the one map.

So, I’m trying something new, and tonight’s map will be done with Viewranger, (hopefully).
